Oswin Appollis remains one of Orlando Pirates’ most influential attacking players, but his reduced starting opportunities under Abdeslam Ouaddou have become a talking point. A comparison of his first 14 appearances across all competitions in 2025/26 and 2026/27 reveals a clear change in his role.
Why is Appollis not starting every game?
Following Pirates’ 1–0 Carling Knockout victory over Sekhukhune United, Ouaddou explained that his decisions are part of managing a large squad and protecting key players for important fixtures. He described Appollis as one of the team’s best players and rejected suggestions that his reduced starts reflected a problem between player and coach.

Appollis has started two fewer matches and played 127 fewer minutes in the comparable period. His goal contributions have also fallen from seven to five, although he continues to contribute in front of goal. The numbers suggest a shift towards more selective use rather than a complete loss of importance.
